Oh, those eyelashes.

22 May

If you haven’t happened to notice, Ian has the LONGEST eyelashes of anyone I have ever seen. Honestly – they are ridiculous. Everywhere I take him, people mistake him for a girl because of his big eyes and dark, gorgeous lashes (can you tell I’m jealous?). Well, for as much as I love them, one little eyelash has been causing us quite a bit of commotion around here.

Image

About four months ago, Evan and I noticed that Ian had an eyelash that had grown under the skin on his upper left eyelid. It was really odd and we weren’t really sure about what do to with it. After checking with Ian’s doctor, she referred us to a pediatric opthamologist (I didn’t even know those existed…) who told us that he had never seen anything like it either. However, he suggested that we have surgery to remove the eyelash before it would become infected. So, after a couple months of wrestling with insurance, we finally had the surgery this morning. Ian was all smile before the surgery, and I was all butterflies. Because he is so little and wouldn’t be able to hold still, the surgeon suggested for him to undergo general anesthesia (via gas mask). Leaving him in the arms of the nurse anesthetist was really tough, but the surgery was quick and seamless – Ian was done in less than 5 minutes! When I talked to the doctor afterwards he told me, “It took less than 10 seconds to remove. Probably about 8 seconds.. yeah about 8.” Needless to say, I was very happy when they brought him back from recovery and put him in my arms.

Thank you all for praying for Ian and I this morning. He is doing great –  no side effects or grogginess from the anesthesia at all. I don’t think he even realized anything is different! God is good.

How He Loves.

26 Apr

How He Loves (played here by David Crowder Band)  is one of my most favorite songs. Every time I hear it, something inside me leaps – the truth it proclaims echoes in a deep place in my soul. I am not always very good at understanding, appreciating, or accepting God’s love for me. It is a continual struggle in my spiritual life to understand God’s love for me – I guess somewhere in my fallen nature is this whispered lie that I have to do something to earn God’s love, that I have to measure up to His standard, that I have to fulfill some grandiose purpose to keep His love.

But God is breaking me down. He is teaching me, reminding me, wooing me with His overwhelming love. Evan and I are studying 1 John for our devotions, and today, as I am asking God to remind me who I am in Him – of my identity – He brought me to this verse -

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us” – 1 John 4:16

I’m meditating on those words for today. That God’s love is known and reliable. Oh, how He loves us SO!!!

Today, and always, may you walk in the fullness of God’s incredible love for you.

he just keeps on growing.

22 Apr

Time flies when you’re having fun right? Well, we must be having loads of fun around here because time is rushing by quicker than I can keep track. I know it sounds cliche, but I honestly feel like we just brought Ian home from the hospital a couple of weeks ago, and yet, it’s already been over 6 months! Every day Ian is changing, growing, and doing more exploring. Sometimes when I pick him up from his crib, I swear he has grown during the night! At his 6-month appointment a week ago, Ian weighed in at 15 lbs. 6 oz, and is 26 inches long! It’s hard to believe that my little boy has already doubled in size, but I’m so thankful to have such a healthy baby.

I’m making a photo book of Ian month by month, but I realized I haven’t been doing very well at keeping all of you updated on all the ways that he is growing. So, here are a few pictures of all the new things Ian is up to!

For the past few months, Ian didn’t like being cuddled very much and always wanted to be sitting up, facing out so he could see all that was going on. Then, right around the beginning of April, he started becoming more relaxed and wanted to snuggle more. Evan and I are loving this phase! Sometimes at night he is really cuddly and it’s hard to put him in his own bed. He still loves him thumb (only his left one, of course) and sleeps on his side most of the time so that he can suck his thumb at the same time.

As far as sleeping goes, Ian has grown in leaps and bounds the last few weeks. Ever since Christmas, he has been waking up 2-3 times in the night. We have had quite a few visitors and also traveled often, so it’s been difficult to get in a sleep routine. Ever since Ian was born, I said that I would let him cry himself to sleep, but when his sleeping became so erratic, it was really hard for me. I worried that maybe he was going through a growth spurt, or hadn’t had a good evening feeding, or had a bad dream, or a million other things that kept me constantly worried.  Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I was so exhausted from waking up so many times in that night that Evan and I decided to let Ian cry it out for a couple nights, just to see how it went. The first night we heard Ian cry twice, but he went back to sleep on his own after a little while. The next night he was only up once, and even since then, he has been sleeping through the night almost every night! This may seem small, but it has truly been an answer to prayer for Evan and I. The constant worry of how often he would wake up was frustrating for both of us. And, as crazy as it seems, Ian has also been a much more consistent napper since he started sleeping soundly at night. I never knew I would spend so much of my prayer life praying about sleep!

Another big milestone happened just last week – Ian graduated from his infant bathtub (that top picture is from his very first bath!) to a ducky tub that fits inside the big bathroom tub. Now that he is sitting up on his own, and splashing like crazy, this blow-up bath fits him just perfect. He wasn’t too sure about it at first, but after a couple of times, he is now loving having more room to play with his toys and splash around. I think we might try setting it up outside later this week as a make-shift pool so that we can enjoy the sunshine. (Thanks for the tub Aunt Lisa and Uncle Kris!)

Although he isn’t making any attempts at crawling yet, Ian LOVES to stand up! He has been standing since he was 2 months old, and can stand up without any help if placed against furniture. He hasn’t figure out how to pull himself up to anything yet, which is a blessing I am relishing for the time being. He looks so big in this photo, I can hardly stand it!

Ian is all about the outdoors, just like his daddy =] Whenever he gets fussy, we take him outside to swing, go for a walk in the stroller, or like in the photo above, strap him in the bjorn for a hike in the woods. Evan and I are both looking forward to all the adventures we are going to have with this little boy!

Another one of Ian’s favorite things, actually his most favorite thing, is eating. And when I say eating, I mean eating and eating and more eating. No matter what I put on the spoon, Ian eats until it is all gone. So far his list of foods includes the ordinary baby purees like oatmeal cereal, applesauce, and bananas, to more interesting choices like avocado, sweet potatoes, prunes, and kiwi. He’s even been spoiled with a little bit of frosting, ice cream, and cookies (all from his adoring aunts, uncles, or grandparents of course!)

Little by little, more and more of Ian’s personality is showing through. He absolutely loves the camera, and is fascinated by mirrors and reflections.  He loves music, and is very intrigued when Evan plays the guitar. Ian is also very excitable, and kicks, squirms, and flings his toys when he gets really happy. Although he doesn’t have a large range of sounds yet, he stares at mouths and tries to imitate the sounds we make. Lately he has been testing out the idea of spitting and buzzing his lips, which is really cute, except when practicing coincides with eating…which happens to be quite often =]

So now you’re all caught up on the details about our adorable little man. Each time I write about him I’m reminded of what a blessing it is to be a parent. Recently God has been doing a work in my heart, reminding me that Ian his first and foremost HIS child, entrusted to Evan and I to train up in the way he should go. This reminder has been both a relief and a burden, pushing me to follow hard after Christ, so that as Ian imitates me, he will be imitating Jesus. And on the days, hours, and minutes where I am not living up to that desire, I am rejoicing in the fact that even with all the love I have for Ian, God’s love for him is so much greater!

Thanks for stopping by. We love you all so much!

resurrection day.

HE IS RISEN!

This year, Easter took on a whole new meaning for me. Knowing what it is to love a child, a son, made me stand in awe of God’s love for us. To think that He would sacrifice His son, His ONLY son, to adopt some raggedy, messed-up, naughty kids like you and me. What a love! As we sang “How Deep the Father’s Love For us” I couldn’t help but think about Ian, and praise God for His unfailing goodness, that He was willing to give up His son, so that I could have mine. Truly, how deep is His love for us!

Our church, Calvary Chapel of Enterprise , hosted a breakfast before our Easter service. It was a great time of celebration and community. After the service, we headed home where Ian was gifted his very first Easter basket. (I know, I know, he’s too young to understand or appreciate it, but I just couldn’t let his first Easter pass by without doing a little something).

[Ian's first Easter outfit...before he soaked his shirt with drool]

[very excited about his bunny!]

[his basket contained a new blanket, a rubber ball, sandals, some chocolate bunnies (guess who really ate those?) and a story about Jesus]

[a little performer for the camera]

Our wonderful friends, Sean and Nina, invited us over for Easter dinner. Nina made a delicious ham with a brown sugar/honey mustard sauce that was to die for! It was a gorgeous day here, so we all sat out on the back porch to eat. It was such a blessing to have good friends to share the day with.

Here are a couple pics out in their back yard…

Even though Easter is over, I’m still spending time reflecting on the resurrection of Christ, and all of the hope that we have through that truth – that Christ is not just alive again, but that He is resurrected in perfection – a perfection that as a follower of Him, I get to share in, both now and for eternity.

I know this song was probably played everywhere this Easter, but it’s still one of my favorites. If you get a second, check it out – let its truth sink into your spirit. Christ is RISEN!

planes, parties, and other craziness.

9 Apr

When Evan and I found out we were going to be parents, we spent alot of time talking about what “type” of parents we wanted to be – the values we wanted to instill in our children, the lifestyle we wanted to live in front of them, and the truths that we wanted to teach them. One of those values is to have a sense of adventure – to take risks and do things that are out of the ordinary and unexpected. So, in keeping with our desire to teach Ian about adventure, we bought some last-minute plane tickets and flew up to Michigan last weekend to surprise Evan’s grandparents for their 50th wedding anniversary party! It was a crazy whirlwind of a trip, but we had a wonderful time, and Grandma was so surprised to see us! (By the way, I LOVE surprises, so I was almost as excited as her!)

Ian took his second trip on a plane, and did pretty good on the way up (the way back was a different story though… let’s just say the man in front of us wasn’t so happy when Ian screamed the entire flight….)

The anniversary party was a huge success and such a beautiful celebration of a marriage that has stood the test of time. Grandma and Grandpa renewed their vows in a small ceremony with close friends and family. They are a beautiful story of God’s faithfulness! Here are a few shots from the day -

We were lucky enough to spend some time with my family during our quick trip as well. The usual craziness ensued (what can I say? Speed scrabble brings out the best in us).

[we're weird.... I know]

Evan and I went to a movie with a couple of our sisters and left Ian with my folks. When we came home, I found these pics on my camera…

That’s right – Grandpa Rich introduced Ian to his first peanut butter cookie. I should have known I couldn’t leave those two alone together  =] Needless to say, Ian loved it. Looks like he may have inherited his mama’s sweet tooth.

Now we’re back home in good ol’ Alabama and are looking forward to a few weeks of calm after the crazy month we’ve just had.

So what about you guys? Have you had any last-minute adventures lately? Any cookie eating or wrestling going on at your house? Leave us a comment – we’d love to know who actually reads this thing!

Apache

27 Mar

Hey folks! Evan here, I have been shunned and ignored  for the past couple weeks as Kelly has been punishing me for not posting about aircraft selection. Well the house is messy and were getting ready for vacation so I figured it was time Kelly and I should start to talk again so I logged on to the old blogger to tell you all about the glorious news. It was a couple weeks ago and I chose the last Apache on the board. They had been telling us all that there were not going to be any available at all and when the screen rose to reveal 4, we were all quite surprised. I had always loved the Aircraft, but never wanted to get my hopes up about flying it. Their mission is to kill and destroy bad guys. They have a 30mm (that’s huge) cannon that is moved by the gunners head, and aimed where the retina of the eye is focused. The wing stores can be a combination of Hellfire guided missiles and Hydra 70 Rockets or extra fuel cells. They are made to search and destroy or accompany other friendly forces and provide aerial protection and support.

I start the course April 19th and its 21.4 weeks. I dont know much  about the progression of the course, so as I learn I will fill you in. They mandate I  have Chapter 5 and 9 that’s Limits and Emergency Procedures memorized for the first day of class. For now I go to the beach and STUDY!!!! And here are some pictures of this killing machine for your viewing pleasure.

a little Florida sunshine.

22 Mar

It has been BEAUTIFUL weather here the last 2 weeks, and we decided to take advantage of the warm temperatures and sunny days by heading to Destin , Florida, with some friends for the weekend. We stayed at a beach house about 50 yards from the edge of the water. It was surreal! If you’ve never been to Destin, or anywhere along the gulf coast, you are missing out! Beautiful white sandy beaches stretch as far as you can see, and the water stays relatively warm, even during the winter months. I (Kelly) grew up as a TOTAL beach bum (my family would pack a cooler and hang out for a whole day at the lake) so it was a lot of fun to take Ian on his first trip to the water.

I was a total first-time mom and freaked out about putting loads of sunscreen on him, and making sure he had his hat on at all times!  Luckily for me, he was too enthralled with the waves, the sand, and all of the crazy kids on spring break to care much about his outfit (he usually hates hats!).

Evan took Ian for a walk along the water, and when he came back, Ian had snuggled right against his chest! Ian usually HATES when you try to snuggle with him, so I had to snap some pics.

Having the house right near the beach was wonderful, especially since Ian still takes three naps a day. Evan and I were able to take turns watching him and getting in the water. We fashioned a little chair out of sand for Ian to sit in, and he had a ball chewing on his toys, and quite a bit of sand as well…

 [a natural beach babe]

Our friends were so sweet and watched him in the morning so that Evan and I could go down to the beach and watch the sun come up over the water. We even saw some dolphins playing in the waves! Moments like that make me stand in awe of how good God is to create so much beauty for us to enjoy!

Have any of you been to the beach lately? Or been having unseasonably gorgeous weather? We’d love to hear about it, so leave us a note!
